They are entertained by a professional harpist, or singer, and learn about the customs and manners of England’s polite society in the early 19th century.

School of Booze at the Artillery Arms

Welcome to School of Booze at the Artillery Arms - an atmospheric neighbourhood pub near Old Street. This is the venue for customers who have booked School of Booze beer, wine or cider tasting events through Living Social and Smart Box.

The Grade II listed pub has existed since 1702 and was rebuilt in its current form in 1860. It is named after the Honourable Artillery Company a guild of citizen archers that was granted a charter by Henry VIII in 1537 when it was known as the Fraternity or Guild of Artillery of Longbows, Crossbows and Handguns. Its main purpose was the defence of London. Members included Christopher Wren and Samuel Pepys.

Bunhill Fields (now a leafy public park) opposite the Artillery Arms was a cemetery where non-conformists or Dissenters were buried until the 19th century. It is the resting place of writers and poets John Bunyan, William Blake, Daniel Defoe, John Milton, and George Fox, founder of the Society of Friends (Quakers).

The Artillery Arms offers a selection of excellent Fuller's ales, a good choice of wines, and freshly made tasty pub grub – including a Sunday roast lunch for carnivores and vegetarians.

Occasionally School of Booze runs beer, wine or cider tasting classes for individuals and private groups at the Artillery Arms by prior booking only. Please contact us for more information.
